Cotswold Monochrome

Devastation 2

I decided earlier this year that I needed to enter more competitions (perhaps that should be ‘some’ rather than ‘more’). I missed the closing dates for the first one that I’d planned to enter, so made sure that I got some digital images ready for the Cotswold Monochrome Salon.

I’ve entered this competition with prints in the past, but decided on ‘projected images’ this year, as its easier and much cheaper to do these. Acceptances in the Cotswold Monochrome Salon count towards the BPE (British Photographic Exhibitions) awards. Most BPE competitions accept colour as well as monochrome images, but obviously this one is monochrome only.

[singlepic id=4 w=200 float=left] Well, I got the results from the 2010 Cotswold Monochrome Salon today. I had no acceptances but did get one near miss … 11 (out of 15) for ‘old and new’ (left). Acceptance cut-off point was 11+. The other scores were lower.

  1. mike, I had the same result as you. Amongst my 4+4 entries there were about half which had a good history of acceptances elsewhere (WCPF, national and international) so I shall be very interested to see what sort of thing got through. Do you know who the judges were? Do they have a good reputation?

    • Hi Martin,
      The selectors were:
      Tom Dodd FRPS
Alan Millward FRPS FPSA Hon. PAGB
      Steve Smith FRPS MPAGB

As Cotswold Monochrome is the only national monochrome exhibition in the UK, I would guess that the organisers would have no difficulty in getting judges with a good reputation. I only erratically enter these sort of competitions, and while Iaim to do more from now on, that means I don’t recognise judges names.
The other probable effect of Cotswold Monochrome being unique is that it is likely to attract the ‘best’ of monochrome photography, so difficult to get acceptance at. (that’s what I’m telling myself, anyway!)

      • PS
Tom Dodd as a photographer is someone I admire – I have a book of his work in my ‘library’

  2. Yes, Tom Dodd does have an impressive B&W landscape gallery using plenty of contrast (sky/snow etc) and some wide angle stuff. Steve Smith has some interesting B&W, but I would find them difficult to live with; again some wide angle. Can’t find anythings on Alan Millward.

  3. All three judges at Cotswold Salon 2010, the National Exhibition run by Cotswold Monochrome, have an excellent reputation. It is not easy to get acceptances because it does attract some first class photographers. All I can say is that if not successful this year please try again, an acceptance is something to be proud of.

    • Thanks for commenting Peter (and for the work that must go into running these exhibitions!) – I’ve entered the Cotswold Monochrome I think three or four times before (with prints), and this is definitely the best I’ve managed so far, so i’m not going to give up now! I’ll be back next year to try again :)

    • Thanks Geoff. Yes I have received the notification :)

I’m not sure whether I’ll enter or not this year, as submitting prints is so much more hassle and expense, though I can understand your reasons!

      Good luck for the salon!

    • I have submitted an entry, and convinced a couple of other members of Holmes Chapel Camera Club to enter too, sharing postage costs
