Holmes Chapel Camera Club’s first entry into a national competition

We entered the Photographic Alliance of Great Britan‘s annual print competition for member clubs for the first time this year, in the small clubs class (well, we are a small village camera club after all!). We are delighted to have placed equal 16th out of 91 entries (and the highest placed from our region – Lancashire and Cheshire).

One of my monochrome images was amongst those selected for the entry by our club competition secretary, Anthony Holloway – Old Time Engineering, shown here.

Well, it seems appropriate having just posted on my last competition entry of 2011 to follow-up with my first competition entry of 2012, even if it’s a very different sort of competition!

Barn Detail

I am entering this print into this month’s round of the United Photographic Postfolios group which I belong to. It’s a photograph taken during a visit to the Lake District in the Autumn of 2011, and shows a detail from an old barn by the side of a road near Hodge Close. As far as I could tell it was built using the same techniques as the dry stone walls common in the area – just stones roughly cut to size and held in place simply by gravity and will-power! Any paint that may have been applied to the wooden window frame has long since disappeared.

Entry for the last exhibition of the year – Port Talbot

Yesterday I finally got together my last competition of the year – for the inaugural Port Talbot Camera Club International Salon for digital Photography. Entries close today (31st December 2011) so my entry was pretty much last minute – an end to a year of very erratic entries to competition.

There were three classes available – monochrome, colour, and people. It will be no surprise to anyone who knows me that I didn’t enter the people class, but I did enter four images for both the monochrome and colour classes some old favourites, and some new.

Silloth Steps awarded Gold Label

Silloth Steps

I entered this image into another competition – this time a round of the United Photographic Postfolios group I belong to. It’s a monochrome photograph of some old steps up the dunes from the beach at Silloth, which have clearly seen better days! (It’s a digital image, converted to monochrome using Photoshop and Silver Efex Pro). I was delighted to discover it had been awarded the Gold Label, with six of the eight other members awarding it top marks!

As a result, it will be exhibited later this year at the Annual meeting of the UPP of Great Britain. (Looking back over my records, I’ve had at least one image awarded a Gold each year except the first year I’ve been a member of this group.)

This particular image has a mixed exhibition record, scoring highly in some exhibitions (such as the Bristol International Salon of Photography) , while being rejected without a score in others.

Old Time Engineering 

I submitted two prints for our local camera club’s first open exhibition of the season. I was delighted to be awarded first place for my monochrome entry, ‘Old Time Engineering’. I’ve also entered it into a United Photographic Postfolios box, but it will be some time before I get the results from that. It depicts a detail from a steam engine being restored at Threlkeld Mining Museum, in Cumbria. Restoration is nearing completion!

My second submission was ‘Approaching Storm’ – a photograph of a few trees spotlit by a shaft of sunlight against a backdrop of gathering stormclouds. This was taken near Cranage Manor – and heavy rain duly fell shortly after the photo was taken! This photo was awarded third place in the colour print section.

Both photos will be in an exhibition of the top entries at the local library in November.

Beyond Group 4th National Exhibition

Once again I’ve entered the Beyond Group’s National Exhibition. This year the Beyond Group has added print classes to the program, and I had intended to submit prints, but in the end I hadn’t got them ready in time so again entered digital images.

As a change from my usual competition entries I decided to enter primarily colour images rather than monochrome, so it will be interesting to see how these fare in competition. I submitted three colour digital images in all, One being the image to the left. The heading image currently used on this website is a crop form one of the other images submitted.

I also included one monochrome image … I couldn’t do completely colour!

Judging is this weekend, with results due shortly afterwards. Fingers crossed!
